These five paintings are inspired by my paternal grandmother, Bebe, and the poem she wrote for me, “Poema de amor a mi nieta”.

When I was born, she was overjoyed to welcome a granddaughter. After losing many babies herself, she had always longed for a daughter, and in many ways, I became the closest to that dream.

She wrote many poems throughout her life—some shaped by grief and loss, others filled with light and celebration. This is one of those.

In it, my grandmother welcomes my arrival into the world by preparing her garden—dressing it in beauty, in festivity, in love.

Poema de amor a mi nieta

“Mi jardín se viste de gala con la llegada de mi soberana, bailan mariposas en torno a tan bella dama, ella sera las mas hermosas de mis rosas la primera y la elegida sus cálidos pétalos color miel y su talle como un fresco jazmin, sera tan tan mía mi rosa reina que no la cortaré del rosal allí la llenare de caricias en la suave cuna de mi corazón y mis latidos la mecen al compás de mi amor”
